I probably had the opposite reaction of most that I have seen here about the arrival of the d700 from Nikon. After this introduction, Canon will inevitably be forced to come out with a replacement for the 5D. I hope that they do. As someone who is looking into getting into wedding and portrait photography in the future, I figure that I will be able to get a used 5D for a good price in a couple years. This paired with my current 40D and the lenses I'll pick up while I am finishing up college should give me a great combo for weddings when I graduate and start photography as a side job. As I said before, "Go Nikon!"

Competition is good for the consumer. We've seen some great strides in digital imaging due to the "rivalry" between Canon and Nikon.

Agreed - competition is always a good thing! One particular innovation I find interesting is the ability to take BOTH full frame and cropped lens formats. The viewfinder on the d700 even has a built in letterbox type of overlay that appears when you attached a DX lens. Maybe this feature exists on our cameras, but it's the first I've seen of it.

I was beginning to think there was a mass conspiracy to get consumers to buy into EF-S / DX lenses - only to obsolete then by going back to full frame as a standard. Hopefully this will spur a similar feature on Canon bodies, if it's not already in the works.

John

Sounds like a good purchase! Since I enjoy doing mostly nature photography right now, I figured the dust removal would be handy as well as the high fps #'s of the 40D. On the plus side, the 28-135mm IS lens has proven to be a good kit lens for the price. At this point I feel like I made the smartest choice with the resources I had. That being said, I would love to have both of these cameras and probably will in the future. Where did you purchase your 5D btw?

Well, Nikon had to do something else because that D300 was still far from the 5D.

It's always fun to see the competition up the scale a bit.

Thats exactly the way I looked at it too! The minute I heard about the D700 coming out the first thing I thought was YES! The 5D Mark II will be out soon too! AND maybe for less money than the D700!

I wonder how many times the 5D replacement has gone back to the drawing board. I hope this doesn't send it back again. I understand there are physical restrictions on the EF-S lenses that might preclude Canon from doing what Nikon has done with the D3 and D700 and their DX lenses.

I've already got the 5D to keep me going, but my continued dissatisfaction with my 1DMKIII and the near perfect specification of the D700 may see me reactivate a dual system.

I really have too many cameras though, if the 1DMKIII had worked correctly I'd not be thinking about Nikon at all, it's a fuss trying to protect the 5D from the rain and knocks that a professionally used machine has to endure ~ but, sadly, it's my best camera

Maybe Canon will cut their lens prices by 5% across the board.

Well, if you love what Nikon did, wait till you see the new Sony FF. Nobody will buy it, but Canon will be forced to compete with it.
