Hi - am I being really stupid ? I have just returned from a long trip and started downloading all my shots only to find there are no raw versions ... I shot in manual and AV most of the time and have certainly got "Raw and L" switched on. Have I missed something (I have managed to shoot RAW in the past and am not aware of having changed anything) - I'm really peed off with this, 3 weeks in Spain and all I've got to show for it is some crummy jpgs - anyway no use crying over spilt milk ! Try taking the memory card out - then use a card reader hopefully you'll find your RAW files on it (thats where mine were, if your connect the camera to computer you wont see them ).

If they are not on your card i dont know what to suggest.

First, can you see the RAW images when the card is inserted in the camera and you view the pictures on the camera LCD screen? If so, then the images are on the card. A good first step.

Second, what program are you using on your computer to view the files? Does it support the RAW format? Some programs, like earlier versions of iPhoto, do not support RAW format.

In addition to setting Raw+L in the menu, you must set raw mode in the function settings (same place you set light balance, image size, etc.)

When you view the image on the LCD ...you are seeing a jpeg even if you shoot raw...the raw files should be on the card. Transfer by card reader and you should have both file types....shooter

Well GordonSBuck had it - I needed to set raw in function settings. As far as I'm aware there is no mention of this in the manual (though I may be wrong I haven't read it cover to cover) why is there a need to set it in both locations without a warning - I'm really disappointed that it was so easy to get this wrong and that, as far as I can tell, this wasn't something I was able to be aware of unless I was able to download the files to a computer. I am pretty careful so this sucks ! OK sulk over - i still love the camera, just an expensive trip wasted - apart from the food and beer and the beach and the sun and the diving and the good days out and the pretty girls and the wine and the markets !

I know this because I, along with many others, made the same mistake the first time I tried raw+jpg.

On the brighter side, and probably the reasoning of the Canon designers, is that even with raw+jpg set in the main menu, you can intentionally switch to jpg only in the function menu. Also, you can switch to small file sizes, compresson, etc without having to "unset" the raw+jpg.

To be more precise: both settings do not depend directly on each other, so i would not blame Canon... ;)

Settings - RAW configures if you want to shoot RAW instead of JPEG.
Menu - RAW+JPEG configures to create an additional JPEG to a RAW picture IF "Settings RAW" is active.

What do we need the later for? E.g. for direct printing out of the camera, that's not possible with RAW only. Any picture post processing (red eye, ...) isn't possible too, so this option does make sense for me.

And, yes, this is explained in the manual, but as far as i own the german version, posting the page number might not be helpfull.
Like many other, i needed to make this mistake to understand the point. It's "learning by doing" i think and you've made the right conclusion to remeber the good sights of your trip... :D

Regards,
Piet

The manual discusses each function separately, e.g., shooting RAW and shooting RAW+L, but makes no mention that you need to turn RAW on first before you can shoot RAW+L. I suppose someone could say, yeah of course you need to turn RAW on before you can shoot RAW+L, but I can also see how someone could overlook that. BTW, when you turn RAW on, a little RAW indicator appears on the LCD screen.

Thanks to one and all for their comments and it's good to know I wasn't being a total dummy. As has been said - we live and learn ... now got to work out how to get the roll of film into the damn thing ! ... Roger
