Here are a few pics from an AA game I shot the other day. All were shot with an MkIII and 400 f/2.8 -- EXIF is embedded. Perhaps they'll give you an idea of how much I move around during a game. I like to shoot at least one time through the batting order from one or both photo wells then move into the stands and dugouts for a few shots.

1. I usually delete images like this because it's obviously a swing and a miss, but some card companies want this sort of face shot. Shot from the first base photo well.

2.Shot from the stands -- first row of seats just beyond the backstop toward third base.

3.Also shot from the first row of seats beyond the backstop but toward first base.

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

Awesome set of photos, I enjoyed looking at them.

I don't really know how the baseball photography scene works, basically are you shooting these games, and sending a set of images to a baseball card company and selling them somewhat like stock images to them? Or are you contracted through a certain company?

I shot this game as a freelancer and on speculation -- like most I shoot. I own copyrights to all the images and I sell usage to various clients. The card companies I deal with send me lists of guys they need for baseball cards. If I have images of guys on their list I send the images to them and if they use them they pay a fee for that one time non exclusive use. I also send selected images to clients like Baseball America and MiLB.com for non exclusive publication and website usage. It works a bit like stock photography but MLB restricts the sale of baseball players' photos to bona fide clients -- news media and trading card producers.

Jerry:
Nice shots! Got to love that 400, 2.8! Thanks for the perspective on location of the shots. Very helpful.
Cheers!
Chris

Oh yes, also just curious, on the last shot, how much of a crop did you need to do? I'll assume that even with a 400 from there that it is not a full frame shot?
Chris

Here's the full frame image (resized for posting here) the crop was taken from.

I've kind of settled that I like the more open shots like the pitcher in post 5.... they seem to have the most "tension" in the shot... what ever that is. I also like shots like 4 because the prove you don't need a dang ball in the shot to show action. I am finding the same broken rule works really well in Tennis... ball is nice, but emotion trumps ball every time.

Good to see your still out there clicking away... good stuff.

Ciao from NC.
