Hello, my friends husband called me to ask of a lens recommendation for her birthday.
She refuses to go digital and shoots with the EOS Rebel G.
She uses the camera mostly for shooting youth sports.
The limit is $1200, possibly a tad more.

I myself use the 70-200mm F/4 but I want to upgrade myself so I don't want to recommend that one. I was going to recommend the 70-200mm 2.8.

What do you think?

I also wondered if he should upgrade her camera body but I dont know a thing about film?

70-200 2.8 is a great lens for youth sports. I love mine.

Since you say youth sports, she should be able to get pretty close to the action. Sounds like the 70-200 2.8 is the winner here.

Yes, if she doesn't already have it I'd definitely recommend the 70-200/2.8.

Wow! I'm amazed to hear of anyone still shooting youth sports with a film camera, unless it's just as a hobby and very occasional! I simply couldn't afford it with similar events I shoot... Buying and processing 40 to 80 rolls of film a weekend would break me, or make my prices too high to be competitive, not to mention all the down time changing rolls and the slow turn-around time.

No kidding. Actually in my town the pros who do events (like the school sports festivals) still shoot film, and they are constantly swapping out rolls. In teams of two they regularly put up 1200+ photos for sale...

I can only imagine the savings if they went digital. Old habits truly die hard.

Considering all the photos are square, it looks like the shoot MF? What does a digital Hassy cost these days?

I've been trying forever to get her to go digital...she won't. She shoots as a hobby. She wouldn't know where to begin with editing if she went digital and honestly, if she is happy with film then I should let her be. I dont want to be the cause of her freaking out if she doesnt get the hang of digital lol.

Thank you all for your suggestions. This is the lens I thought would be best for her as well. I may also recommend him to grab a 1.4 teleconverter, what do you think? I have one myself but only used it once because I don't like going from F.4 to 5.6 but i think I would use it if I had a 2.8.
