high speed sync - permanently set?

Was reading an article the other day talking about high speed sync (HSS), can't remember the link. The author was explaining HSS and I found it answered many questions I had. Basically what I got out of it was that he has his flash permanently set to HSS. If you're shooting at speeds below the critical speed (1/250s for my setup), the camera/flash just behave as is HSS is not set. But if you shoot over that speed, HSS kicks in.

So I'm interested to hear what others have their flashes set to.

I set my flash to normal modes as i know most of my shooting with flashes are with speed 1/250 and slower, but if i would like to use higher shutter speed than 1/250 then i set my flash to HHS, i can leave that HHS on always [permanent] but i didn't.

I typically set it when I need it. Bumping up against the 250th sync speed, and needing to manually turn on HSS is just a way to remind me that I will have limited range, reduced power, etc. But in thinking about it, it probably wouldn't matter much and I could just leave it on HSS. If I took a shot and exceeded the range or power, I'd know right off the bat anyway, and realize its because of HSS. So I may go ahead and leave it on for a while and see if that makes more sense for me. But the amount of time its not in manual mode is kind of rare anyway, since most of my photography is setup where manual mode is faster to use.

I use it only rarely, so I only set it when needed. But the article is correct that you can keep it in HSS mode all the time if you're conscious about your shutter speed and what it does to flash power.

And i know that if i didn't set it to HHS then whenever i increase the shutter speed above 1/250 then my camera automatically go to 1/250 [or 1/200].
