I'm new to photography and just want to know if there is any justification to this rival or is it just a "Ford vs. Chevy" type thing. Are Nikons really that bad?

Oh, yea. And one of those other guy's DSLR's.

Canon digital is superior at most, if not all, price points.

If you want an unbiased response I would not recommend asking that question here.

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.

In the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s Nikon was more popular with professional and advanced amateur photographers. In the digital realm I think Canon is clearly the front runner. I owned three Nikon F series film cameras. When I made the switch from film to digital, Canon was my choice.

From what I've learned in the past couple of years
Some Canon user went to Nikon due to the body changes & then that means lens becoming out of date. Which means more $$ for Canon.

I've seen some change from Nikon to Canon due to Customer service issues and better selection of glass

Most of the sport photographers I've met chooses Canon & wedding and Portrait photographers choose Nikon.

Overall to me Chevy & Ford you choose whats best for you.

Me myself I have Canon all the way back to the Ftb model & never will go any other way.

You're right, Dr. Bear. I went and took a look in the DSLR forum and there is a post on this subject many pages long. It looks to me like it boils down to the "Ford vs. Chevy" controversy. One thing I did notice, though, is that someone mentioned that if your into sports and action shots go with Canon and if your into portraits and wedding pics go with the Nikon. Overall they seem to both be superior cameras.

I purchased my A75 about 3 months ago. Before that I just occasionally took pics at parties and outings and such with el cheapo cameras. I quickly got the bug and signed up for a photography class, which I started a couple of days ago. I'm already looking for a better camera. When I say better I'm mostly talking about something that I can change lens' on. I'm thinking of going with a used DSLR. That way I can get a better camera for less money. Used scares me with electronics, though. Maybe I should go with refurbished? I'd like to keep the price around $700 so I can afford a lens or two. Any recommendations?

Pugdaddy, I'd say if you can get a good used Canon digital rebel, go for it. But I can't imagine anybody parting with one unless there was something wrong with it.

Hmmm. See what I mean. I think I'll get the used thing out of my head right now.

I disagree with this statement. Canon digital promodels like the EOS D20, EOS 1D Mark II, EOS 1DS Mark II offer the same quality if not better for taking wedding, portrait photography as their Nikon counterpart.

I used Nikons for years & bought a 300D when I went digital. It's cheap & I wasn't sure if digital was for me at the time. Now I usually use it with my Nikkor lenses & am happy with it.
Anyone you ask will have an opinion one way or another. Some will wonder if they have the "best" & join the "Box of the Month" club. Most of the rest of us will go out & take pics with what we've got, which is what photography is all about, isn't it? ;)
