Hi All

Just to ask what you do? Though I do not carry all the lenses all the time I tend to keep my various lens hoods 'nested' together in the camera bag and unless they are petal pattern like the one for the 24-105 I find myself always shuffling them to find the one that is the right one (lens - 60mm Macro; 18-55 kitlens; 55-200; 70-300) yes I know I should remember which is which but heh lifes too short to 'think' about lens hoods ;) and yes I suppose I could mount them reversed but that then means the bag location for the lens has to be that little bit bigger to drop it in!

TIA ???

I recommend everyone use their lens hoods (at least on forum posts). However, they get in my way so I don't use 'em

you can also try simply putting a sticker on each one with the correct lens.

Yes, logical but sadly stickers can fall off and leave sticky residue...not ideal? What would be good perhaps is a permanent white coloured marker pen but I do not recall ever having seem one???

"Sharpie" brand makes a Silver marker that (when the tip is fresh and new) can write quite small...

Well, if you really need to mark them I suppose you could either pick up different color paint pens or, cheaper yet, different colored nail polish and place a colored dot on the lens barrel and the same color on the hood.

You could try using the length of yarn with knots at each end that Mommy used to use to keep your mittens and your jacket in one place. ;)

Seriously, I keep each lens and hood together all the time. All are in the "ready-to-shoot" position except for the one on my 70-200 f/2.8L IS. That, if not reversed, would not fit in my bag.

Remember that in the reversed position they do add some jostling protection if you bagg should drop on a hard surface.
BTW, they make attractive bracelets when in the way of CPFs but are handy for replacing to protect while walking.

So do you have aftermarket lens caps so you don't have to take the hood off to take the cap off?

Re white pen: I have/had one which is a fine white paint marker from The Stationary Box. Alternately if you have access to a variety of coloured pvc tape....

When my lenses are stored and not in use, the hoods are reversed on the lens. I buy my lens pouches with that in mind so I don't have to worry about them not fitting.

Replacing your lens cap after each shot is a sure-fire way to miss a critical shot. When I'm shooting, the cap come off at the beginning of the shoot and sometimes doesn't go back on until I get home and am putting the lenses away. I store them either in a pant's pocket or in an elastic pocket on the fron of my camera bag.

Thanks for the 'brand' pointer.

Hmm! dotting ID good thought?

I never needed the mitten cord ;) and as for leaving them attached well I would need a bigger bag!

IMO because they are mounted on the end of the lens at the point where in many lenses the mechanism moves for zoom and/or focusing I would think there could be risk of lens damage if dropped???

Centre release caps on Canon lens if only they would!

I will have to find a white pen but as mentioned in OP I do not like the thought using sticky tape.

I had a feeling this would stimulate a variety of replies and I am sure a pen
is the right solution either to mark the lens on the hood or to make a dot pattern replicated on the lens.

Thanks for the insight folks. :)

Oh I misunderstood I thought you stored your lenses with the hoods on in the shooting position.

I agree, if you're on a shoot for a day or a few hours there is no need to be putting the cap on and off.

P.S. center release caps would be the shizt.

Why? The Canon caps work just fine. And they come included with the lenses...

Buy a bigger bag so you can leave the hoods on the lenses and not need to mess around :)
