I have finally been able to get myself into a position to purchase a Sigma 500mm f4.5 EX DG HSM lens after waiting what seems a very, very long time. I took the opportunity to nip down to the MSA British Hillclimb Championship round being held at Harewood to put it through its paces prior to shooting a days worth of Rallycross tomorrow.

With it being July, you'd think the weather would be half decent. Wrong!! I ended up battling against driving rain, and light so poor at times I was up to ISO1000. Not the most ideal conditions to test a new lens, but I am rather happy with the results!

#1 Best way to break in a new lens - take a picture of a Healey

#3 A very tidy OMS - sure I saw this car upside down at Gurston Down on Motors TV the other week.

#6 A lovelly little Jedi - this is one car I would like to have a go in at some point. They always look a whole pile of fun.

#8 I'll finish with another OMS - there was quite a few of them out playing in the wet.

No apologies for the lack of variation in the angles or the tightness of the crops. I only spent a couple of hours at the event, and the whole purpose of the trip was to test the Sigma 500mm lens.

Job down I think! Roll on the rallycross tomorrow!

As usual, any comments or feedback would be most welcome.

Very nice set of shots. I think you got some fine test results.

Nice stuff Simon, think the spray always adds an extra dynamic to a shot that otherwise would be pretty "standard" if you know what I mean. Looks like the new toy is working well, look forward to seeing more shots from you with it... lucky git ;) :p

It's only taken 2 years to get one!

As for the shots, yep I know exactly what you mean. The whole point of the pictures was to make sure the thing focused and tracked properly. It certainly does that :D.

 well it would've been rude not to wouldn't it, and you'd have all thought there was something wrong with it if I hadn't

My waterproofs are all hung up to dry as well. I've got to try and get the water marks off the lens front element after tea .

Accuweather reckons showers at 10am and 1pm, but dry and cloudy for the rest of the day. Fingers crossed!

Thanks Ian :D, although in case my wife reads this, it's not a toy but an essential piece of photographic equipment .

One thing looks certain - at some point tomorrow it's going to rain . It just depends on how heavy and for how long....

Cheers,

Simon.

On the contrary, those are the ideal conditions to test a new lens. If it works OK under those conditions it will be fine in all. Any old rubbish can deliver the goods in blazing sunshine!

From these photos it would appear to be working OK :)

Fantastic even in adverse conditions, looking forward to seeing what the lens and your skills can do in ideal conditions ( if thats posible with the British weather).I can only dream of taking photos like those.

And that made you sooooo miserable, didn't it? I know just how much you hate that lens. Resistance is futile! :p
