I have never shot, nor been to an Unlimited Race. However, I have received Media Credentials to the Madison Regatta. I am only going to be shooting the Finals, which are all day tomorrow.

Does anyone have any tips/ suggestions/ recommendations of what to look for in subject matter or angles? Or could post some examples from other Unlimited Races? I will be arriving early, so I can get a good parking spot, and scout out locations to shoot from.

Will anyone else be there?

My longest lens is a 300 2.8 IS. I do not have any TC's.

Thanks in advance,

How'd you manage to get credentials w/o ever having shot a race? Anyways, I'd say you're best shots would be taken near the water level (somewhere within the siteline of the captain, if that's what the driver is called) and where ever you can find a good background. The fact you "only" have a 300 shouldn't hurt, it'll just require a different approach to composition. Some great boat shot are taken wide (comparitively).

Have you ever shot Unlimited Hydroplanes?

It is not a requirement to have prior experience shooting a race, to get credentials.

Nope, never. So are you connected with a media outlet, or what? I'm kinda confused because credentials usually means either editorial coverage or "sponsorship" by a wire service.

You'll find pictures and observations in this thread in the Motorsports photo sharing section, but here are some more notes.

You'll want to check the event schedule (external link) and the event blog (external link) first.

This year's course is around two miles long. A 300mm lens won't be along enough to reach both ends of the course with a tightly framed shot, but it'll be good enough to let you get properly framed images of the boats as they run deck-to-deck in the near straightaway:

As with auto racing, the most interesting action on the oval course - and the largest roostertails - will usually be in the turns:

But be aware that if you want to get images of turn action with a 300mm lens with the boats coming at you (such as above), you're facing a long walk from the pits and the judges' stand to the area just east of the Madison Bridge, which is where the equivalent of the oval turns three and four are located.

The pits and the dock, of course, are the areas where you're going to get the behind-the-scenes action and the award presentation:

One suggestion would be to get pit candids and general driver headshots first thing in the morning, then move to the east turn for action and protection images of the boats, and stay close to the pits for the final heats and championship race.

It would help to carry a FM radio and monitor WORX-FM 96.7, (external link) which will be broadcasting the race. The PA system doesn't cover the entire riverfront, and the radio broadcast will be the best way to stay in touch with race action and information if you move away from the pits.

Thanks for all the info. I have saved the schedule for tomorrow, and will print it out to keep on hand. What is the best attire for the Regatta? Light & comfy, I'm sure, but what about footwear? Will there be a place to lock up my gear in the Media Center? Will my monopod be useful down on the river?

Thanks for the suggestions.
