I dont need the exact screw from canon i just need a longer screw to make my ghetto homemade bracket a little more secure :) if anyone knows the EXACT thread type or where to buy a couple screws online i would be grateful

Standard 1/4X20.

It's not 1/4-20, it has metric size thread. I can find out Monday when I get a thread size gauge from work.

Both Home depot and Lowe's have a machine screw set covering sae and metric sizes. Take your flash in and match it up. You can also pick up the screw/bolt while you are there. Imagine that!

hmm well i went to home depot, lowes, and ace hardware and they all scratched their heads in confusion... the thread is soo tight none of them had a screw to match it. Soo the only thing left would be someone who has one and actually has access to many different thread types to find out the exact thread... guessing just aint workin :)

Send Canon support (external link) an email and tell them you've lost the screw that mounts in that hole and can't find the specs on the thread and size anywhere to get a suitable replacement. When you get the reply post the info here for us!

The thread pitch is finer than standard fine thread. You won't find it in any hardware store. Typical Canon proprietary engineering bullsh*t.

It is M6x0,5. This is hard to get by, but probably chosen because it is less prone to getting loose by itself.

Only three and a half years to get the answer. Isn't this Internet thing fast?

I have that bracket and was wondering what the screw size was too, not that I need a new one. I recently got a Newton FR3 and can put the U-shaped part of that bracket on the side of my FR3 (the connecting bolt is 1/4 20)to change my 580EX II to the side of the camera for macro shots.

so that's what that thread is for! Never figured out what the purpose of the screw on the flash was for since there isn't too much use with the flash on the side.
