The SB-E2 shows up on eBay for around $100 every so often. That's what I paid for mine, give or take a few dollars.

honestly, what's the benefit of having that bracket vs say a custom bracket digital-T?

Probably none. I have a smaller camera (G12) so it works very well for macro. With a lensmate adapter and a Leica Elpro, it puts the flash close to the front of the lens.

From what I've read, custom bracket, RSS and Newton all make fine rotating flash brackets. I have the Newton FR3 as I mentioned and it also works as an "L Plate" for tripod use so it serves a double purpose. The U shaped half of the Canon bracket screws into the "portrait" side of the FR3...so I can still use it for macro without using the whole Canon bracket setup. The one thing I do like about the Canon bracket is the added strength/support of the side bolt. It makes the flash very stable and secure.

to this day, I didn't know canon made their own brackets. Nifty but really expensive.

Well, since it includes a $65 OC-E3 ETTL cord, it's not quite as expensive as you may think.
