Tripod bag ok for airline carry on?

The international standard for carry on bags is 45 linear inches (115cm) or less, with the longest dimension not exceeding 22 inches (55cm).....OR LESS. Some airlines have a maximum length restriction of 20" (while US Airways and Continental allow 24", for US domestic and flights departing the US, but NOT returning to the US).

So...what do you do? Check it separately or pack it in a checked bag? Or gate check it?

Then, I'm assuming your tripod and case are less than 32"???
I guess the question is what are the options if your tripod and case are longer than 32"?
Pack? Check? Or what?

I checked my tripod. Seemed like a no-brainer since my bag is heavy enough and I don't need something that cumbersome and heavy in addition. There's really nothing that can break on a good quality tripod. I do know my luggage took some abuse though...the plastic cup I received from the B&G was broken practically in half.
