Would appreciate critique of this shot. Is it too dark? The problem with sunsets is they look so good in real life, but hard to emulate on paper.

The picture has a green cast to it. The composition isn't very interesting. Overall, the picture seems a bit dark, yet the highlights are overblown. As their isn't much color to the picture, have you considered a black and white conversion?

Sorry, but the picture doesn't do much for me. Nice try, but no cigar.

Dave, I totally understand what you were trying for,I have a few of those myself! I think, just me, that getting more of the sun and less foreground may have worked in your favor here? Sand absorbs so much shadow, and having it is the "star" keeps the photo very dark.
I would like to see more sky, the horizon is lovely.and less foreground next time....maybe try the sand at sunrise..the light is better:cool:

Thanks for the comments, very much appreciated. I notice when I change the angle of my screen the green is more pronounced.

I think you had an excellent idea, trying to play the contrast lines of the sunset against the sand. Like the others, I agree it is too dark. I also find it looks a little weird not having the sun in the picture.

Good idea, just try it again.

I agree, sunsets look nice but they're not easy to capture. If you shot in raw, try to recover some of the highlights. Brighten the shadows as well.

This is your chance to try HDR with a tripod!

Thanks again for comments, unfortunately unable to try sunsets again in the short term as this was taken on the west coast of Australia and I live on on the east. This shot was about 5000km from home. I'll have to stick with sunrises for the moment.
