I'd go for used Nikon SB-25s or 26s

EOS 20D w/ BG-E2 grip
Nifty fifty, EF 28mm f/2.8, EF 70-200mm f/4L USM
Speedlights SB-25/SB-26/580EX, Pocket Wizards and such

I'm kind of in the same boat. I want to order flashes but they're out all over. I was thinking about ordering the vivitar 285's instead.

All I can say is good luck trying to find a clean SB-26 at anything close to a reasonable price. Since David Hobby endorsed the SB-26 on his Strobist blog, the supply of SB-26's has dried up dramatically and it has been an absolute feeding frenzy on eBay.

That said, it is a fantastic flash and well worth seeking out. I have one and have been trying to get another for some time now. The slave function works brilliantly and the ability to adjust output down to 1/64 power offers much wider control than the Sunpak 383.

On the other hand, if you don't need the advanced capabilities of the SB-26, Sunpak 383's are readily available on the used market. Within the past six weeks, I bought two mint 383's on eBay for approx. $60 each and think they're great.

I picked up a Promaster FTD 7000M for a great price on ebay and I really like it. It's a Nikon mount but works great with my Cactus receivers.

When my Sunpak 383 died, I switched to Vivitar 283s.

So what is the deal? Has Sunpak stopped producing the 383's? I want to get 2 but like above no-one has any.

I would think that if the Sunpak 383 was discontinued, B&H would list it as such rather than simply back-ordered.

I had 2 383 on back order with Adorama and they informed me today that they have been taken out of production by sunpak, so I ordered the vivitars. I also seen in a thread here that the 383 are no longer being produced.

which vivitars did you go with? 283 or 285's? I read that the 283 was taken out of production.

Would the Sunpak 444D be a suitable replacement? Here's a thread (external link)discussing the differences.

Yes, that is the actual Sunpak 383 in its "full name."

Nice...thanks! What's a good deal for used Sunpaks? Do they play well with Vivitars? Thinking of buying three Sunpaks or Vivitars but I was wondering if they work well together (ie 2 Sunpaks and one Vivitar).
