according to the strobist blog the 285HV has a low sync voltage. I can't confirm, just what I read.

Sunpak would have to be insane to discontinue the 383's. Think about it. Old technology, no R&D, no retooling, high demand. They could produce more and up the price with the current demand. Of course, a new, simple, modern flash unit with PC socket and optical slave built-in would be good too.:)

Call them insane then, it is on there web page that they are discontinued, and No one has said anything about going back in to production, other than rumors.
