Decent Filter (under $100) to Protect my precious 70-200 2.8 ?

Hi all,

As the title indicates, I'm after a protection filter to protect the front element of my lens.

I just don't feel comfortable leaving the 70-200mm IS f/2.8 lens hanging with no protection on it.

My budget is limited as I tend to buy the pocketwizards and many other things.

I need a filter that doesn't effect the image quality and it's purely for protection purposes only.

Think long and hard about putting another piece of glass over your very expensive lens. The NYIP (NY Institute of Photography) tells its students not to do so. I've put the below filter on my 17-55 becasue of a dust issue only. All my other glass is filter free. The below filter scored best in a recent test by someone. Google it. Good Luck!

You should get more than sufficient protection for the lens with the hood that came with it. The hood also has the additional advantage of helping to reduce flare from incidental light striking the front element of the lens.

As you're about to find out, there are 2 schools of thought on protective filters and both sides will fight to the death over it .

If you're going to use a protective filter just make sure it's a good one and not a cheap single coated one. The B+W I mentioned is considered by many to be the best. The Hoya looks like a good one as well.

Yep, those are the ones I use on all my lenses, cept I would suggest you check out the price at hvstar.com first.

Use a high quality filter if you must, but definitely USE the lens hood that was supplied with the lens whenever the lens is out of the case. The hood will provide significantly more physical protection for the lens than any filter ever could (except for the rare case of lightweight debris flying straight at the lens, of course).

Keep in mind for the lens to be fully weather-sealed, you'll need a filter.

That is possibly the only reason I'd use a filter on a lens, if I got a weather-sealed L lens. Or a 17-55
