Wonderful colors on that first one. Have you ever been into the framing store on Denman? Not the one with all the hockey posters on Georgia but the other one more towards Davie... they have some prints up by a photographer who captures great scenes like this and with a little PS work (like motion blur, etc) he makes interesting abstracts. I made one for my wife's bedroom makeover in his style and printed it large on canvas... anyway, I thought you might check that out as a possible treatment if you haven't seen it. I'll try and remember the guy's name...

I was looking for a nice foreground object of interest, but then I thought... Heck I'll just insert The Hoff with his puppy!!

As for my wife taking pictures of me while I take pictures, she seems to have some kind of facination with it. Everywhere we go I have a picture of me taking pictures.

No I haven't.

So far I've been getting all of my framing done by a guy on Main. The prices and workmanship are exceptional.

I'll see if I can get down there to take a look at the images though. Thanks for the tip Hoff.

I think they're both good shots, but as you said in the first post they are unprocessed. I think they're both good compositions (especially the second shot) but they really need some "pop" to get them to stand out...they're just a little flat. I think both shots could stand a little more saturation, some contrast and some sharpening, etc..

Hmm I think you missunderstood. I meant I didn't have time to process them ALL before I went to bed The ones posted have indeed been processed, but that leads to another issue... Sometimes I have a tendency to go a bit too far in my processing, and in the last image I posted I actually dialed back the colours a bit because it was looking quite garish.

I also think the number one comment about my edits is that I over sharpen my images so this time I thought that I would lay off of the sharpening this time. This may have been a bad choice in this instance since these images have been reduced in size by a great factor. The first is a panorama of 5 portrait oriented images, while the last is a panorama of 3 portrait oriented images. I plan on printing quite large, and I may need more bits of information than my 40D can capture so I am using techniques to make it a faux 1Ds

Thank you very much for the comments as it gives me more insight on when to be a bit heavier with processing, and when to back it off.

I think we need realistic expectations of our sunsets... this isn't Hawaii or Florida where the sky looks like it is on fire. Ours have more subdued blues and purples and mauves.

Simply applied curves to darken the darks, and levels to bring up the whites. Using the full luminance range I have blown the red channel a lot, but does the quality of the image suffer because of it? I wasn't setting a white point in the original edit because I was protecting the red channel, which was already maxed. Sharpened as well.

Too much for me. Obviously the web size doesn't matter but I can see the artifacts in the sand and near the log. The water and sky are unnaturally bright. Of course I am on a cheap macbook uncalibrated right now so ignore if necessary.

I do agree with you on this Hoff, and the last edited version I just posted is NOT typical of our sunsets here. The first version of this image is much closer to what I actually saw.

Still, some may prefer the second, but I'd still print the first

That last one is the perfect shot for a long exposure

Yup I like the first much better. I hope you don't mind the addition but here is one I have that I like with the pastel beauty of our sunsets...
