Perhaps Google have adjusted their search algorithm again, I understand they do it occasionally.

Sorry, no idea. But seeing as though Google have done this before it might be worth a search around to see what others did. Presuming that's what it was of course.

I'm not sure if this is still true, but I think at one time google would give "priority" of some sort to newer listings. So new sites would rank higher even if they didn't have a high page rank. I'm not sure how long this priority period would last or if google still does this, but it could explain what happened.

Look up "google search engine optimization". You will find out what you need to do. But you have to be careful. You cant do it all at once!!!!! If google thinks its being scammed by a website to get better results, it gets banned from google results!!!! This is the same as not existing. Actually worse than not existing.

Take a peek at this, its a atempt at a breakdown of how google works.

As for priority for new listings, I haven't heard of this being a factor before. I could see it being an issue for news sites, but when your homepages content never changes (you just have a landing page), this really isn't anything you can change.

AFAIK, this applied to new domains, not new content. This may explain why his site was ranked highly for awhile and is now ranked lower. I've had sites rank very high when they are newly listed on google, only to fall after the first month or so.

Hi,

If you join google (https://www.google.com …//www.google.co.uk/&hl=en (external link)) and add a site map - search for "google site map generators" and verify your site via the webmasters tools it'll help - also google does ranks new domains high for a while before they are thrown into the seo battle

also try this site - excellent free info - http://tools.seobook.com/ (external link) no need to buy anything here unless you want to of course :) just study the documents and use the free tools.

in the tag - <meta name="keywords" content="Edmonton Wedding Photographer, Wedding Photography in Edmonton, Sam Ng Photography, portrait, commercial and senior pictures, Photo journalistic Style, Alberta,">

cut down your keywords to the most applicable - or the market you are aiming at most - i'd suggest: Wedding Photography in Edmonton

It's a nice site btw - but i only specialise in SEO for html / xhtml hitting high ranking in the search engines and cross platform compatability is more important to my clients.

OK OK i'm not knocking flash - it's great and is perfectly suited to art / design / (inc photography obviously) web portfolios - just my clients deal in information provision so flash isn't really required.

Drew-

Very good point there. What are your ideas for the OP to pursue? Do you think a content-based approach is the way to go? I see no other way. It is one thing if his competition is using flash too, but the top ranking sites, including some "cheaters" have keyword density far beyond Sam's.

Oh definitely. Textual content is most certainly a big factor. I think the link that Mark posted breaks it down pretty well. Properly populated meta tags and headings is important as are inbound links. Getting listed by DMOZ is a good idea also.

Btw...the link Mark posted does list a "New Site Boost"

89 Site Age - Very New Boost
Temporary boost for very new sites - I estimate that this boost lasts from 1 week to 3 weeks - Yahoo does it too.

Google had to expose most of how they do search when they applied for a technology patent. There has been several articles and a few books that tell how to optimize. If you do a..... google search for "google SEO". You will find several places that show what is needed to be done. Google has changes a lot of what they look for. Such as the mentioned meta tags. Thanks to spamers and porn sites, metas are basically ignored by google, unless they correspond with actual content. And google will read like the first 150 words OF CONTENT. To see what the page is about. So you need to be very descriptive, very high in your page.

If you do some home work you can get very good at SEO. There is no need to pay someone to do any of it. Its all something you can do yourself.

Thank you soso much for all your inputs, so Should I cut down my key words... and just keep like "Edmonton Wedding photographer, Sam Ng Photography"? I thought the more the better but I guess its not the case now lol. And I know flash site is not good for search engine anyways but clients likes it and I got pretty good feedback from people. But I do want to be able to "search" in order to grow my business...

You can get arround the flash problem by having a html landing page. Put on it about 3 paragraphs of what you do and who you are, being very descriptive, then a "enter the site" button at the bottom.

Key words are still important for all the other engines. So I would still leave all you can. Its just google has diminished thier value for google search.
