Asking out of sheer curiosity and boredom... has anyone hooked up a theatrical strobe to a hotshoe/remote trigger either for kicks or to get a blast of light? I was thinking something like an Atomic 3000 (see http://www.martin.com …roduct.asp?product=atomic (external link)), which has digital control and remote capabilities.

Harold Edgerton and Gjon Mili did it, so there's no reason you couldn't try. :)

Actually, looking at the numbers, it looks like these strobes aren't as "bright" but illuminate for longer...

That would be the first time I've heard an Atomic being referred to as not "bright" ;)

But yes, these things are made for a rapid succession of flashes, and not one high powered flash every few seconds.

These units typically do not provide very much power in a single flash burst.

If you use them in a room that is near black, at wide apertures, and at higher ISO values you can get interesting images.

In this condition (nearly black room) you will not need any sort of sync connection. Just open the shutter and leave it open until you collect the number of bursts you desire.

This is a common way to get strobe images of leaping dancers, gymnasts, etc.

Enjoy! Lon
