Strobes in the Rain - Any Tips?

Anyone ever tried shooting in light rain with strobes? Obviously I'm not stupid enough to use my Vegabond II unit with a large strobe in the rain, but I'm curious about using some 580EXII's with shoot through umbrellas or a small light dome.

My Pocket Wizards will be wrapped up a plastic bag.

Use your umbrellas? Just a thought...

Don't know the absolute answer, but...

I attended a wedding awhile back where the pro shot in the rain with two bodies. 5D + 580 was bagged, but the 20D + 580 wasn't. The flash and camera were only in the rain for about 20-25min (it was moderate, not extreme but not light rain) but both worked fine still. (I tagged along with his 20D and shot some formals with him)

I'd imagine it can take some rain, but don't really think it's suited for constant rain abuse on a regular basis.

You can do it but you won't like the results. Each of those little raindrops acts as a wonderful round lens to reflect your strobe light.....

^ Giving it a noise effect, right? I guess it depends how hard it's raining.

Thats exactly what I was looking for! Rain in the waterfall with a model in the water

Only suggestion I have is get the light as diffused as possible and as close to the subject as possible. Maybe try differing angles of light....I can tell you on camera or on a strobo-frame sort of thing does not work....

I shoot in the rain with portable flash like 580 Ex2 ans Sunpak 622pro on wireless by placing clear small plasticy shopping bags over the flash.

Zip lock baggies over the flash. No problems.

Another Idea is to put the flash with the pocket wizard on a caddy from flashzebra and mount it on the flash head inside a plastic bag, then have my assistant hold it like the human flash stand! haha

I used this technique with a vegabond II unit and a large strobe with a 3' octodome yesterday and it worked great. Human light stands rock!

Yes, they are. But only when mounted to a 1D Mk III body (which I have) but I don't use much on camera flash So I'm more interested on off camera experiences
