So I took some shots of a snowy egret at a local preserve a couple of weeks ago. A co-worker saw the online version and later an 8x10 that I had printed and framed myself, that I planned to hang up at home. He expressed interest in purchasing a print... Didn't proceed to any details beyond that, such as size, framed or not, etc.

I'm curious, what would you charge for a print? Say either 8x10 or 11x14, perhaps unframed? How about framed/matted?

I'm just getting started commercially, so I have no idea... I did do a quick search here at POTN but didn't see any relevant threads.

I only sell prints that are matted and framed, and only 11x14 in 16x20 frames. $350.

A print is worth what you can get for it. Some people charge $10, some charge $1000.

Yeah, I figured the answer might be a little nebulous... Just trying to get a rough idea, so I don't say, "Oh, for you, $500!"

And then he walks away. :D

I haven't sold a pic yet but I would think $30-$40 would be a fair deal framed and matted.

If $500 is the value you have set on it, yes.

That is basic business. You set the price and the buyer has the option to accept it or walk away.

But if you know it is a person that doesn't really appreciate photographs but likes having something that looks good on a wall, you might have to aim low on this one,

Print cost x 5, plus frame cost, wouldn't be a bad place to start.
If you think it seems a bit of a bargain, try print cost x10
My 10x8s are £5/$10 and framed prints go for £20/$50. Never had anyone raise an eyebrow at the price yet, so I could probably charge more...

But that too is a slippery slope. Been there, done that. Then you can get caught having to justify different pricing when a friend of a friend wants to buy it and you quote the real price.

I've come to believe that it's best to only have two prices; retail and free. Friends and family get it free, everyone else pays the real price.

have solid selling prices.. that way you don't seem a little like uncle joe.. you don't go to louis vuitton and negotiate; you go and buy... if you're selling your brand, then make it concrete.

I do have a price list for friends and family, but other than that.. it's what it is..

That's what I'm thinking; having a fixed price. He's a co-worker, but not a friend and certainly not family. I'll have to crunch some numbers and see what production costs would be (basically a Canon PIXMA Pro9000, quality paper and a relatively cheap (off-the-shelf) frame). I'm liking the $50-100 range offhand.

A mat will cost you about $10 (precut) and a frame will cost between $20 and $35 in standard sizes, possibly more.

Personally I never sell unmatted prints, and vast majority of my sales are matted and framed, but I do continue to offer prints with mats only, in case someone wishes to choose their own frame.

You don't have to justify your pricing to anyone. You tell them your prices are your prices.

If they were really your friends, then they would respect your talent and/or professionalism and pay the real price.

Whatever you decide to charge, don't forget to add costs for fuel, packaging, etc.
