Motocross suggestions

I am going to go to a FCA Motocross event and do some shooting. Anybody have some suggestions or tips.........I'M ALL EARS!

Could you possibly tell us what gear your using so we can give you useful advice?

Man, i even thought about that then forgot. 40D with the 28-135 IS, 55-250 IS and a nifty fifty. Basically a beginners kit.

Not sure what your skill level is so here is some general advice.
Get some some shots of the first turn. Position yourself so that the bikes are coming right at you and shoot when the leaders start to turn.
Pay attention to the background when shooting aerial shots. Trees, lightpoles, etc. can clutter up a good shot.
I like to use a slow enough shutter speed to get the spokes to blur. Start with 1/250 sec.
Find a big loose berm that the riders are slamming into to get the "dirt explosion" shot.
Get close and do some panning shots at about 1/60 sec. This takes practice so expect a lot of duds.

I'd say use the center focus point only and also switch to AI Servo. That's what I typically use to shoot moto stuff.

Also follow JSkinner's advice on composition and backgrounds. It can be pretty difficult on certain tracks and I know I can do a better job of that as well.
