One of my 580EXII broke...well literally the bottom was was almost ripped while it was on my new 40D. I was about to get another one, but I thought. Wait a second. The bottom is WIDE open, the bottom front red glass is gone, BUT if I pressed the test button it still works...:) Let me go over canon and ask them how much will it cost...well...$110 dollars to fix...and they say that is the flat fee for broken 580EXII...WOW! I will have it back in about seven business days.

Lesson learned: Ask for estimates, before jumping to coclusions. I saved over $300 bucks.

You can buy a brand new shoe assembly (with a 1/8" Sync jack to boot) for around $54 + ship.

I could fix it without the need for $110 =)

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

I use duct tape to fix everything. :D

My camera was on a tripod and it hit the ground with flash on...:( I was "happy" that only the flash got damaged...:)
