So, I am making about 1200 over the next week, and want to know how to spend it.

I know that I am going to put 800 of it towards a used 135 f/2L, but other than that, i am unsure.

I WAS thinking that I would get a 580exII with the other 300 (100 is going towards gas/food etc for the week haha), but now I am having second thoughts. I mainly do car photography (click here for example (external link) ;)), and was thinking that since i already have an old SB22, the 580 would be nice to have as a main flash. Now however, I dont see much that is special about the 580, and could go with some cheaper flashes (and light stands etc) and also build up a car rig, which i've always wanted to do. If there is any money left over, im sure the GF would appreciate a nice dinner too ;).

Any other thoughts or ideas on the matter would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you're mainly doing cars, I think you'll do a lot better with a 17-55 EFs 2.8 IS lens than the 135. It covers the focal range I use most for car shooting, will be a LOT sharper than your 28-135, and the IS and 2.8 aperture will let you get keeper shots during the magic hours around dawn and sunset when the lighting is best. Another option would be the 24-70 2.8L which does not have IS, but will work if you ever upgrade to a full frame camera that does not take the EF-s mount.

Thanks.

I think i will consider that, but the 135L is just awesome haha. I was shooting with a 70-200, and since my shots are usually outdoors, i can just back up :).

I think what i am going to do is get the 135L and another flash, lightstands, umbrellas and triggers. Thanks for the help!

You will get a lot less of the background in the shot if you use a longer focal length from a greater distance. Look at the product shots you have taken with the 28-135, do you take most of them at 135mm?

I'd focus on the lighting. Good lighting does more for product photography than anything.
