What are the odds that we caught a glimpse of Aurora Borealis in northern Wyoming?

The odds are medium that you will see them that far South. On the other hand, sounds like you did see them. Cold clear nights seem to be better, but if you hear of a solar flare, then you could see them in Florida if it's a big one. And you don't need to be down a well to see these either. I have seen them right here, out my back porch door, and we have a streetlight in the yard. Bookmark that link I included above and check it every now and then. You can even sign up for e-mail alerts. That shows almost real time Auroral activity over the poles, as seen by some special satellites for that purpose. Nothing like free early warning. :)

Ah, I have also seen a fireball, when I was a kid, in the daytime. I believe now, this was an electrical phenomenon, not a meteorite. It went across the sky at about the size of a dime held at arms length, bright white and trailing bright yellow/white flames in the classical cartoon look. Not long flames, maybe double the diameter of the ball, and it was silent. It also just fizzled out between eye blinks but was easily visible for 5-6 seconds.

A few years later, I was out walking at night on the farm and happened to look up, as I was doing a lot as a kid, and saw a meteorite coming straight at me. It was a white star sized dot that expanded, not making a trail. In other words it was coming right at me. When it reached the size of say a house fly at arms length, it exploded into 5 even pieces and they all went out at the same angles around the center. These left trails exactly like meteorites and fizzled out after about 20 degrees of arc. Also silent, and it lasted maybe 4 seconds or less.

It took me years to put this all together and I did ask my brothers and other people if they had seen it too. No one had. But I have since seen either video or artist renderings of these phenomenon on PBS. Never seen a UFO though, sorry. :)

My boxes of goodies was just found on the front porch. Luckily by me. ;)

OK, first impressions. I have seen better work, but all this stuff is well worth the money paid for it. It looks like it will last for years, assuming your not beating it up every night. I have not put it all together, but it's all there. Haven't unpacked the motor drive yet. It's cloudy and rainy and the same is forcast for at least the next 8 days.

Did I forget anything?

Oh, I was wondering how you mount this on a tripod, but I see how you did it in the first pic on page 1. Is that pretty solid?

Hi Mitch. Sorry I hadn't been checking this thread for awhile. Congratz on the new toys!

Generally speaking, $50 rarely gets you more than a low-budget filter or some kind of adapter in the realm of astronomy gear. That being said, the build quality of the EQ-1 actually impressed me given the cost. It's a chunk of metal that should last for a very long time with this application we're using it for. The EQ-1M motor on the other hand will likely need to be handled with care. The housing is plastic and I'm not even sure about the gears. They could be nylon rather than metal for all I know. It does assemble very easily so I've been removing it for storage to prevent the weight of the EQ-1 accidentally pressing down onto the drive.

Mounting it to a 3/8" tripod bolt may look a little precarious at first due to the vertical distance that is basically exposed around the thread shaft. This space would normally be hidden by the little table-top tripod legs. I had no issues at all on my Bogen/Manfrotto 055XDB but I"ve seen one other guy who made a wooden bushing to fill the space between the tripod plate and the underside of the EQ-1 base just for peace of mind. Personally I don't think it's really necessary but I might make one anyway on my lathe. It certainly would improve the overall look.

Good idea. My brother has a lathe and needs something to do. I think I will have him turn one out of walnut for me. We have tons of walnut here. ;)

Be sure to post some results whenever your skies clear. I'm eager to see what others can do with this setup.

I will. I actually went down to a park outside of town the other day to shoot some night shots, as practice, but the skeeters ate me alive. I did not take the mount though. I did finally get batteries for it today though. We are in our Monsoon season here, so it may be awhile. :)

I have this thread bookmarked, so I will resurrect it like Lazarus, when I take my first skyshots using the mount and motor drive. ;)

Curt thanks for your time in this thread. Im ordering a set up now to get the australian 'upside down' view. My question (for which anyone may be able to shed some light on) is how accurate is the unit with its tracking ? I appreciate its an economical unit built to a price however i was always under the impression that this sort of tracking required an exact mechanism...clearly i am wrong looking at your photos but i was wondering if the exposure was left longer than 2 mins (say 20 mins) would i start to see the motor & the earth get slightly out of sync with each other ?
