It was taken in jpg only, and just doesn't look sharp to me. Part of it was the distance from which I took it....part of it was that it was my first day using a lens of that size. ;)

What's the saying, "You can't sharpen blur/OOF" or something to that effect. Some PP might help with the image at small sizes (since "sharp" is relative) but there is nothing that will make a 100% crop of it sharp.

Nope. Make sure that if your shooting without a tripod that your shutter speed at least stays at or above your focal length for telephoto lens. They increase any movement you make. In this case your were shooting at 1/125 @ 300mm (ISO 100). Increase your ISO if you need to bump up the shutter speed or open up your aperture more.

1/125 second @ 300mm

Where you hand holding it?
Was your AF on?

I would of bumped the ISO up so you could get a some what faster shutter speed.

No saving this shot, sorry.

I was hand holding, yes...we were on a ride (biking) and couldn't carry a tripod. AF was on, and focal point was where it should have been. Wasn't a huge fan of the lens (it was a borrowed Sigma 70-300mm non-APO) but it wasn't mine to complain about. ;)

Not much you can to now. You could have use the bike and a "tripod" or flat on the ground sniper style.
