Hi there guyz, my name is Geoff and I am a newbie here...

anywho....going to the snows in 2 weeks and want some tips of how to take photos in the snow

I'm using a 40D, 70 - 200 2.8 and a 24 -104 F4 IS..
I have CPOLs on them but not really sure how to use them as they were given to me for free.

In addition, what about condensation ? I'm in sydney and going down to thredbo and perisher....any hints or advice ?...don't really wanna come home with a bung up slr..

I've done some research and know a little about keeping ur batteries warm...compensate for exposure...but thats about it..l'm more concernd about condesnation...

Thankyou very much

Geoff

A lot of folks do the plastic bag routine - bag the camera outside (where the air is colder and drier, and move indoors, not opening the bag.
Next day, take the camera out in the bag, and let it acclimate to the weather before opening the bag.

Instead of CP filter, I'd recommend a Tiffen Haze-1 filter to kill the UV at the higher altitudes - read this piece by Bob Askins all the way through - good information.

Welcome to POTN!

can anyone give advice on how to take pictures with a 30D out in the snow?

Because you have a descriptive title, you can look at the "Similar Threads" links at the bottom-left of this page!
Each link you visit should provide more links at the bottom.

 Spoiled sport! Just because you know how to use the boards efficiently, doesn't mean you have to share that knowledge! Sheesh! Imagine! A moderator helping out! What's the world coming to? How are we mere "members" supposed to get their "post count" up? Sheesh!

You need to overexpose snow...

Your in camera meter is designed for an 18% gray. That means that it will expose snow so that the white is a muddy gray. one or two stops of extra exposure will return the white (we hope it is white - don't eat the yellow snow) snow to its original whiteness. There is, of course a narrow line between getting the snow to look white and blowing the highlights with overexposure. I tend to bracket exposures with no correction, +1 stop and +2 stops correction.

I have used the 40D in temps as low as minus 40C with the windchill and haven't had much in the way of probs.

Just bag it up outside, and wait a few hours upon coming inside for the camera to equalize

Don't bother with the polarizers IMO, and if your photographing anyone or anything in the snow, use -2/3rds of a stop EV in order to keep the snow white, especially if its sunny out. Use the histogram to guide you.

Your camera is alot smarter than the "M" Zealots would have you believe

Try manual in those tough conditions. First set the f-stop & shutter speed you need. Then adjust the ISO.
Need an exposure crutch?

This shows how the subject can affect the exposure & why manual keeps me worry free:
