I have a great ugly long bit of grotty dust that I need to clone out but... when I try in CS3 phoitoshop nothing happens

I created a duplicate layer, selected healing brush ( also tried spot healing brush), drag it across the opffending bit of muck and it seesm to be working but when I lift the mouse it reverts to the image as it was - no change

what am I doing wrong?

thanks

Have you tried using the patch tool? if there's a sliver next to it that's identical (or damned close) in color, tone, etc. it usually works pretty well. I used it to remove sandals and wine glasses from a beach.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Make sure that the SAMPLE pulldown is set to 'all layers'. Otherwise it will sample your current blank layer.

no haven't got the hang of how that one works yet , but anyway it's a complicated bit of sky so I doubt it'd work here

A couple of things to check:

Check the brush blend mode. Make sure it is set to "Normal".

If you use a graphics tablet, your healing brush might be set to "pen pressure". If so, it just takes an extra push to get the tool working. To check, right-click while using the healing brush, and check "Size" at the bottom of the dialog box.

Also, make sure you don't have any selections hidden (cmd/ctrl+h to hide all). If you do, cmd/ctrl+h to unhide, then deselect (cmd/ctrl+d)

Hi - checked - yes -blend mode is set to normal

Either using a graphics tablet OR a mouse the same thing happens, it appears to be doing the job as I drag across the blemish but it reverts to how it was when I release the mouse or pen:confused:

Also check the blending mode of the duplicate layer.

Does 'regular' cloning work?

yes all (two) layers are 'normal'

never tried regular cloning not got that far yet:eek: I only tend to PP rather than manipulate images, so for photos it's only removing dust spots really

When was the last time you cleaned your sensor? Doesn't help these photos but sure would make your future a lot less spotty! :D

clean it regulartily but it is never 100% sotless but then I go to the coast and only have to change lnses once with the wind and the cr*P in the air and hey presto -muck!

OK been experimenting more notice that if I use the spot healing tool about 5 times it gets it done so it seems that somewhere somethignis set to about 20% flow or fill but I have checked wherever I can and it is all set to 100%

In the process of trying different things the healing tool decided it would not flow but would only do a single spot- what's that about?

When all else fails, it's time to think about the nuclear option, resetting your preferences file:

Cool, more like a Tactical Nuke, I 've used the multi warhead nuke to fix problems like this, uninstalling/reinstalling CS2.

This should be much faster so long as the prefs file acts the same way in CS2/CS3 as it does in PS7. Has anyone deleted this file in CS2, CS3?

Its easy to reset your Photoshop Preferences to their factory defaults.

Double-click the Photoshop icon to start it, the immediately press the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT keystroke combination and you will be presented with a dialog box; select "Yes" to confirm and you're good to go.

I reset my Preferences in CS3 regularly and I've never noticed any real downside other than having to redo my selections in Edit > Preferences > General.
