40D battery grip, too much?

When I used to own a 400D I thought the battery grip was great as it made the camera much more comfortable to hold and most importantly to me it made vertical shooting easy.

I currently own the 40D, which provides a much better grip. I would like a battery grip for vertical shooting, but don't want to make my camera too heavy and cumbersome. Has anyone else found a 40D with grip to be too big?

It’s a personal preference. I think that the 40D is already too heavy and that’s without a grip, but that’s me. Others couldn’t see shooting without one. See if you can find someplace to try it out for fit.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Carl, this says it all really. It's a personal thing and only you can decide. As far as I'm concerned I like my 40D with a grip but that's just me.

When I first got it I was shooting withou the grip but as I began using my heavier 70-200L IS etc I found it gave me more stability - not only while shooting but even when just setting it down.

I find it much more comfortable to use a grip, but at the same time, I find the weight a little bothersome somtimes. But in the end, I just suck it up.

Woah... I have the 10D with grip and it weighs a TONNE compared to my 40D gripped.

Honestly the 40D feels like a fisherprice 'my first toy camera' to me... for the record I'm skinny and weigh 10st. I'm not a meat-head.

From my point of view the 40D feels better weighted with the grip but ultimately... it's personal preference and your typical environment that you're shooting in :D

Boy, you guys are a bunch of wusses...

I regularly shoot air shows with a handheld gripped 20D and 100-400. I know there is at least on person on here who shoots air shows with a 1DIIn and a 500mm f4... also handheld.

The grip makes it look like a more expensive and important camera. That in itself is worth the extra (wasted) money.

My opinion is that I have never been able to financially justify paying to hold two batteries at once when it takes less than 30 seconds to remove one and put another in its place.

I love the grip on the 40D.

I did a week w/o it, and regretted it a lot. So I bought another.

Now i have the 30D, almost same camera weight, so i'm feeling the same!

This is never a problem for me. I always shoot with a grip no matter what camera or how heavy it is.

I don't use the neck strap and usually just carry the camera around in my right hand with the strap dangling. Having the grip on it makes it that much more heavy which pulls it into my hand that much better and the front of the grip and the body's grip form a wedge-shaped ledge that my hand can nestle in, making it that much more secure.

So for me I love the heft and the extra security I fell it gives me while handling the camera, not to mention the benefit of it when shooting portrait orientations.

40D + Grip = Great (IMO)
To me the balence with larger glass just makes it worth the weight. It really is not even that heavy. When renting large primes 300 or 400 2.8 it still is great having that grip. Just flows better and balences better to me...
