Just got a new 2x converter, tried it with my 135L. Holy cow, I'm very impressed. I have the sharpness in DPP set at 3 for RAW

Being that the 135L is one dang sharp lens, I am not surprised by your findings.

I miss my 135L...it was unbelievably sharp!

Might be better to show us something without any sharpening. Though I wasn't impressed with what you did show. Maybe f/4 and macro just don't go together. But maybe I am biased as I've always been under-whelmed by the 2X on that lens.

The 2x doesn't seem to hurt the primes much at all, it's not quite as nice to the 7-2/2.8IS but it is very acceptable, I sold my 100-400 and with the 2x they are very very similar.
never say never but I (hope) to never have to part with the 135L Nick, you're right, it's razor sharp:)

Well for my unsteady hands, this shot looks pretty decent to me:)

that's very impressive with the 2X Matt. like i said before, as long as you can get fairly close to the subject, the 2x is in fact very good on most good lenses. the problems begin when you are very far because the 2x have some issues with resolution at the long distances.

Well they are dying off in the wild at a tremendous rate so you should be feeling a lot better these days.

I suppose if the 2X did not work well with that lens it would have no hope of being useful with any lens. Well maybe the 200 f2 now.

135L + 1.4x + 2x on 5d = 378mm, no PS.

...it'll do in a pinch.
