I think the cameras are too small, especially with larger lenses. The Grip makes your grip better. The portrait controls are mostly useless in that you can't access the rest of the controls on the back of the camera when using them, but they are cool to have.

Darn, you beat me to it :D

Seriously though, perhaps go and try one, they do balance the camera nicely when using heavier lenses and of course the portrait shutter release is great.

Which camera? For a Rebel series definitely get one. It makes it feel so much better. For an XXD series I'm not so sure I would get one. I've used a 20D and it felt pretty good without it. I haven't tried one with a grip though. A lot of people report not liking a grip on a 5D.

Adds a lot of bulk so your bag has to be bigger and adds a fair bit of weight. Battery life is quite decent and the only time my batteries started to report being depleted before they really were was when I had a grip on.

I don't like the Canon grips. They just look cheap to me, but whatever floats your boat!

It is nice to be able to do it both ways. Sports and events....gripped....walking around Vegas or places in general...no grip.

It love the feel of it both ways....

I am easily amused by many of the grip discussions. People (including myself) always (ok, a little bit exaggerated) talk about the balance, look, feel. Isn't it true, what the grip designed for is to give you more battery life? Let's say if we ask, do we need the grip if the battery is a nuclear one and never die? The answer still is Yes?

I am using a rebel XT.

It is funny, battery life was not a factor at all in getting a grip for my XT. I only ever put 1 battery in it. The extra controls for portrait are nice but I would have still got it if it didn't have those. The Rebels are just too small.

I like the grip on my XT

I have a 30D and a 40D along with an XT (which I should be selling soon).

I don't use nor need grips on the xxD cameras but, it really helps the balance of the XT.

I bought my grip when I replaced the lighter 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens with the heavier 24-70mm f/2.8L. Without the grip, the lens seemed to large and too heavy for the camera. The grip helps very much.

I don't need the extra battery life since both the XT and my 30D and 40D are great in that respect. Besides, it is a very quick manuever to replace the battery in a gripless xxD. I haven't timed it but, I think it would be quicker to replace 2 batteries in a gripless xxD than to replace the two batteries in my grip.

I bought my grip on eBay and it is from China. It seems to work just fine.

I HIGHLY reccomend the grip since you're using the XT series. I came from the XTi and 50% of the reason why I chose to upgrade to the 40D was because the grip felt so much better!

The grip on the XT series is just way too small....:o
