Same here, I have a rider on my homeowners insurance. It was very easy to set up. A call to my insurance agent, fed him the serial numbers and value and he did the rest.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Yup...i have mine insured through USAA. Costs me about 20 bucks for a years worth of coverage of gear up to $5000 bucks. You can purchase more or less usually if required.

I am a renter and added it as an extended coverage policy. I have All my camera gear, computer, and musical instruments covered. For the renters insurance and the extended policy, I think we pay something like $33 a month. Well worth it for the money I have into gear and stuff.

I have separate business insurance for my gear. It's not cheap. But I like to know if I lose anything, it is recoverable. And where I shoot, insurance is required almost all the time.

I have "valuable personal property" insurance through USAA.

Its a nice policy that covers pretty much anything that happens to my photo equipment (and anything else on the policy (i.e. guns, jewelry, etc)) no matter where it happens or what happened to it.

Drop my stuff in the ocean, dropped on my kitchen floor, stolen from my rental car in DC, mugged in Morocco, get caught in a monsoon, etc....EVERYTHING is pretty much covered for its declared value.

I have $14k worth of stuff insured for $157 per year. The only catch is there is a $100 deductible, so nothing worth less than $100 gets on the policy.

is that a national company? or do you recommend a local place?

Have my stuff insured thru State Farm. Forgot the total value for everything but it's covers all my gear and whatever might happen to it. All for $70/year, not bad. They call it "personal article insurance" I think.

USAA is national...but you have to be military, ex military, retired or usually in some way in relation to someone who was in the military to be able to have an account through them. State Farm is probably your next best thing.
