is the auto focus on everyone's 50mm 1.8 not sharp at all wide open? i took the same photo twice....both at 1.8 and the manual focus one is sharper. i don't remember my pics with this lens being this out of focus before (i've had it about 3-4 months)..have i done something to mess up my AF? or do a lot of people have this problem?

manual focus:

In MF you have sharp center and soft top petals.

In AF you got sharp top petals and soft center.

I think it just went for a different focus point in AF.

The focus between those two photos has shifted. That's the real issue with the 50mm f1.8 in my opinion. It can be a fine lens when you achieve focus or can stop down a bit, but it's AF is pretty poor. Regardless, you get more than what you pay for with this little gem.

ok my bad it did shift...whoops! i guess i just feel like the AF should be sharper because everyone always talks about it being a sharp lens. then again i can't complain much b/c of the price

It's a fine tool, but I think it'd be a bit silly to suggest that it has great AF capabilities. I use the AF as often as I can get by with it, but I do find myself switching to MF in many tricky situations.

Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I have problems with my AF on 50 1.8(my keeper rate is only 30-40% in low light) as well. Is the 50 1.4's AF much better?

The 50 1.8 autofocus is inaccurate, buy a better lens if you need better performance. The 50 1.4 is definitely better, it has a USM motor.

cancan7, my professional photographer friend told me that the 50 1.4 is much better, but the focusing speed is also dependant on your camera body. Also, i suggest you avoid 'focus and recompose' technique and see if it works. Correct me if i'm wrong.

My 50mm 1.8 struggles with it's AF, so I tend to keep it in MF most of the time. Small price to pay for a good lens at a great price.

Although, I am starting to get that itch to move up to the 50 1.4......:lol:

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 is a bit better, but it still doesn't have traditional the ring-type USM that it really needs to shine for auto focus. I haven't heard much about the Sigma 50mm f/1.4, but some have speculated that it will have fast, accurate AF, albeit at a higher price point.

I've uploaded two pictures taken with the 50 1.8II, the first one was out of focus, while I got the second one correct. I know the pictures are too small, but I don't know how to upload bigger pics from Flickr:
1st one, OOF
