So today we had calm winds and sunny skies. After work I headed over to the nature preserve to try out stacked 1.4x and 2x teleconverters on the 500 f/4. It was interesting that only the 2x reported, so AF was not lost and aperture reported f/8 and 1000mm, although I was really at 1400mm. The viewfinder was pretty dim of course, and AF was very slow so I just used manual focus, and a cable release. Here are the results.

My kind of focal length.... amazing shots, Liz! Yes, when stacking TCs, only the one attached to the lens is seen.

Thanks all - this was the first time I'd tried stacking the teleconverters, so I didn't know what to expect. I thought the results were pretty good. Maybe next time I'll try mirror lockup and see how well that works. I'm looking forward to when the chicks are bigger and I can hopefully get some better shots of them!

geez Liz does the combl get pretty loose with that monster lense on. i'm just wondering how tight of a fit it is. very nice shot considering the distant.

My understanding is that the newer Canons will stack if you use 1.4x and 2x. Older TCs or other brands may require an extension tube between them. That wouldn't have worked for me in this case because I was pretty far away and with an extension tube I wouldn't be able to focus that far.

Fit pretty tight as far as I could tell. I didn't notice anything being loose.

ah ok. cool. i might have to experiment with that sometime with my 100-400mm. although i have a feeling it'll feel like i'm holding a boat...
time to start workin' out. ;)

maybe you can post a picture of your whole setup next time?

It's worth a try, although I've keep in mind that when you're using teleconverters, and especially the 2x or when stacking them, IQ is really going to be affected by the lens being used. So your mileage may vary. I can certainly get a photo to post next time I set up. And actually I was thinking it might be interesting to get a photo of the whole scene to show how far away I was from the osprey nest.

Cool shots, but I do have a question, since you have a 1.4x and a 2x TC stacked, would you add the 1.4x and 2x to get a 3.4x TC, making the focal length 1700(3.4x500=1700), or do you have to do each one seperately (1.4x500=700, then do the 2x700=1400)? Just sort of new to and was wondering about that.

Thanks
