...without being on mind-altering substances.

Both landed.

Critique the first one. The last one sucks and is a throwaway.

Hmm, so only critique on the first one.. OK *smiles*

When I first looked at it, I thought that's a nice shot !
There are few things I thought that might improve it somewhat.. (and this could be just because of my monitor).
The tree and the fence at the background become a little distracting, once you notice them there.. before I noticed them, I thought that the black background worked nicely with this picture... now I wish it was darker. If that makes sense.

I like the lighting on the first image, works nicely with the subject.
If you'd have the chance to try it with two light sources (another from behind the skater.. it would be interesting to see what that does to the image.
It might work.. or not.. just a suggestion.

That's just my little opinions... all in all I do like the shot!!
Well done !

I have two light sources used, one lighting his back and one lighting his front. I wanted to rimlight but I only had one other flash and an optical trigger, and it wasnt triggering. :( Thank you for the critique!

Great shots!!

# 1 is a true winner. Love the lines and the composition is really effective.

first shot is great for many reasons, lighting is on, angle and comp perfect.... this shot really works loose and I'll give my reason why, its all about the shape of the bowl and how the coping splits the dark and the light.... super job

second... nice camera work, but being around skating for over 30yrs... that hand not on the coping itsnt working for me... tell him to try harder next time....lol

Yep like I said second shot is a throwaway. Either way he just learned 'em and it's probably the hardest trick to shoot, ever. I need to figure out how to better time them.

I really like number one. My only nitpick is that a rimlight would make it look a bit better...but you already knew that!

I don't know about you but I can't skate with earphones. I need to hear the sound of my board.

I can't either. Josh can't skate without them. Tomorrow we are going to shoot a millerflip on the deep end, on the coping probably, and possible a rodeo flip on the deep end of he mans up and tries it.
