40D with the Tamy 17-50.
Camera was on but in sleep mode.
I was able to rotate the mode selector (M-C1-C2...etc)
Able to change between different modes (M to C1).
Able to change shutter speed.

Not able to take pic.
Pressed shutter firmly and nothing.
When I pressed the Menu button the menu would not display.
No error code or anything funky on the top display.
Latest firmware ( 1.0.8 )

I calmly removed the battery and the inserted it in the bay after about 10 seconds.

I was able to take a picture, use the display, playback pictures, etc, the menu button worked again, LiveView works, I can change AP and shutter values.

Basically it seems that everything works now.

Anyone ever run into this before?

Should I send it in?

Camera is a bit more than 1 month old with roughly 1000 actuations.

Sounds like the battery wasn't seating correctly. I wouldn't worry about it yet, but if it continues as an intermittent fault, then maybe get it checked out. It could just be a one-off event.

Thanks but I don't think that is the case and after all some things were working on the camera.

Additionally removing the battery is kind of like the fix it all trick for Canon's.

I did the same for the 10D when it had the ERR99 and it took care of it.

Anything goes wrong I usually remove the battery and that does the trick.
