Canon 450d

Hey,
I recently purchased a Canon 450D. According to the manual, the file size for my photos should be around 11 or 12 megabytes. The settings are set to "large". However, my photos are only 4 or 5 megabyte in size. Should I change the settings or something? I tried taking pictures both manually and automaticly.

try shooting raw format and see what size you get

4-5MB sounds right, are you sure you aren't reading 12 Megapixels?

I think you're confusing megapixels and megabytes. If you look at pg. 64 of the manual, it lists the file sizes with respect to what quality setting you're getting. Shooting jpeg large is about 4.3 MB, which is what you're getting. For larger files, you would need to shoot RAW, which is 15.3 MB per shot. RAW + L is the raw + jpeg quality where you get 2 files per photo, one in RAW and one in jpeg (large).

My guess is your shooting high quality jpeg, not raw. Take a look on page 65 of the manual and check your camera settings. I’ll bet it’s line 1 of the table.

Looking at the RAWs coming out of my camera they're 10-13MB, so I think you might be reading the RAW column in the manual.
