I have a XTi/400D with the Tamron 17-50, Canon 55-250 IS and Nifty. I was thinking of picking up a used 28-135 for use when I want only one lens, especially since it has IS and has a wide range. They also are easy to come by and fairly cheap. It also covers my gap at 50-55mm. Is this even worth it? I do miss IS on my Tamron.

I picked up the 28-135mm with my 40D and have found it to be a good lens. Here is a pro and con list for you.

pro: cheap
good walk around range
IS
Barrel extends but does not rotate

cons: older version of IS (probably looking at 2 stops max)
lens creep is pretty bad
somewhat soft photos.

On a budget, I would say that this lens might be worth looking at. If you have a little bit extra money, I would go with the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 lens and sell your tamron. This would fill your gap if you feel the need and provide a great combo.

I've had one for ages - it's on its' second body (300d then 40d) and I rarely take it off. It is a great walkaround lens. I think you'll find that you use the Tamron a lot less. Picture quality is excellent.

Here is a sample pic for you. Not too bad if you ask me, especially since it was cloudy. Slight Contrast and sharpness boost in photoshop elements 6.

Exif info:

f/8 @1/500th seconds
ISO 400

I used it for a week, there were some pros but overall it didn't stand on the same level as Tamron IQ and speed wise (btw, I have exactly the same lens setup as you). It had very nice bokeh (something Tamron lacks), good colors, decent AF / speed in good light. OTOH it was soft (a big deal killer for me), and neither wide nor long enough. I didn't think IS on that lens to be much of a difference over either Tamron or Nifty wide open. (Maybe I didn't have it long enough). I actually bought 55-250 IS after returning 40D and this lens to the store, thinking it's a relatively small lens so I can carry it along with Tamron without much discomfort. Time will tell if that's the case.
