Just bought a used 17-40 from a local guy here and the EW-83E he supplied doesn't "snap" on to the lens at all. It shakes and moves around just by touching it.

I'm hoping this is a problem with the hood and not the lens, right? Maybe the plastic expanded in the sun?

They loosen up with time, that one just sounds really loose.

The good news for you is that hood is totally useless on your 40D anyway. Get the EW-83J from the EF-S 17-55 if you want a functional hood on the 17-40 on a 1.6X body.

The EW-83E is practically useless even on FF. I tried the EW83-H from my 24-105 on my 17-40 using my 5D and I still scarcely got any occlusion at the edge of the frame. I'm toying with buying a second EW-83H and using a dremel on it to work with my 17-40. Then the EW-83E goes in the box permanently.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

Ah, good to hear.

Searching ebay, there seem to be a lot of "fake" EW-83J hoods for sale (hong kong)? Anyone have any experience with grey market ones? Difference in quality or should I just go for an official Canon one?

Just get the fake ones. I used to buy the Canon ones but it's just a waste - especially when you can put the money saved into your gas tank. I got the official EW-83J for my 17-40, works fine. A knock-off would work just as well.
