This reminds me of another forum (bfc) where everything gets over analyzed.
BTW, where was this shot?

super cool. I like to see a shot without the 580EXII to the waterfall just to see a before and after.

Over analyzed for sure ;)

I've got a shoot at a local quarry in two weeks. I'll shoot some before and afters, with 580's and 1600ws strobes, etc, and post the results.

I'm still amazed at how much light I get out of small camera flashes these days. Very handy lights to augment studio strobes for accents, rim lighting, fill, and background elements. When I run out of studio strobes (have 6), I can use my 4 580's to expand my lighting setups if need be. But its all the pocket wizards that kill me ;)

This doesn't prove the 580EXII is that powerful, but I will not judge until I've seen photos from the entire shoot. ;)

I don't think the OP was really out to 'prove' anything. It seems to me that he was excited and thrilled by the fact that he could use a 580EXII as a back light from that distance in a setting where there are more powerful strobes as well.

I didn't see the post as some proving ground and for what it's worth I think a lot of people like to see this kind of demonstration because they might not ordinarily think of using their flash or might think that it wouldn't have enough firepower to do anything substantial. As much as we like to talk about and calculate guide numbers I know there are many people that don't understand or use them and don't have any real idea of what small flashes are capable of doing.

Finally, after 3 pages someone actually understands what I wrote mentioning anything about the models ;)

We had a 150ws strobe with a beauty dish attached and tried that against the waterfall and the results were shocking.... didn't do anything, it would almost seem that the light didn't even hit the waterfall.

I have a shot with a model without the 580EXII back light but thats NWS link, so you have to PM me for that :)

My thoughts exactly. Some folks can get a great thrill out of just seeing a tool perform up to their expectations.

I didn't post it though because it would be analyzed to death and I would come across as a brainwashed Canon fan.

I'd put the Metz 60CT1 up against any flash in the power stakes..

Yeah, even the Metz 76MZ zoom head is not on par with the 60CT!

Wow, check out the portability of that flash! it even requires its own battery unit :)

Maybe I can mount my 1300ws strobe to my shoulder like the plasma launcher from the predator and wear my VBII unit on my back. Do you think the Metz 60 can handle that? :p

How ironic that most of us always try hard to NOT make a shot look like it was taken in a cave!

Getting soft are we?? ;) Showing my age here I graduated using Metz 402 then into Metz 60CT1 flashes.. The Metz 45CT1 I used for snap shots.. Never had a problem with their portability,,,wonderful flashes.. At that time I was working as an industrial photographer for a large iron and steel company.. Metz flashes, Linhoff 5x4, Pentax 6x7,,equipment made for real men!!
