I have been using Nikwax products for a long while now and did not see much reference for it here. I use their "Tent & Gear Proof" on all my Tom Bihn bags. And it truly does make them about like a frogs bottom...pretty much water tight.

They also have some wash-in and sponge-on products too. I recently bought an NG5737 Pack for my gear. I treated it with their Nikwax Cotton Proof and it's nice and waterproof (well, water resistant as it's canvas and that is never truly waterproof).

A nice side effect of these treatments is it also helps keep a lot of dirt and dust from sticking to the bag. So I only need clean any single bag once, maybe twice yearly.

As this pack is in no way a watertight pack by any stretch of the imagination and I certainly would not depend on just the treatment to render the bag impervious to all water all the time, but it sure will help keep water out if you set it down in a puddle or a sudden shower happens outta nowhere.

Just thought I would pass along the comment on the whole line of products. The wash-in stuff is really nice as you can use it even for rain pants or vests, and HATS...

Here is their site if ya wanna look at what they have:

Oh, I am also going to treat my lens bags/cases with the same thing so then they should be really protected when I pack up for a trip and use them inside the pack.

Good tip; I use their stuff on snowboarding gear.

ScotchGard(TM) spray works well also.

I never had great luck with ScotchGuard lasting on anything. In the short term it's great. Do they have a more 'industrial strength' product line as opposed to the stuff on the retail shelf?

It's definitely not as long-lasting as the Nik stuff... I just hose down the item(s) every now and then.

Is there any residue that could get transferred to your gear, either directly or through handling? That could have consequences...

^ No, especially since it's only on the outside that you apply this stuff. All of these products are "dry to the touch" as it were and you don't see it, feel it or smell it.
