My first time back here to the races in a long time... Saw lots of white barrel L glass so I'm sure some POTN'ers were there!! I rarely shoot motorsports so these are some shots of the hydroplanes races on the Detroit River from today. Unfortunately, I locked myself out of my car and was armed only with my 100-400 and 24-105... My wide angle and fisheye were on the backseat floor and my wife didn't show up until late in the afternoon so that might explain why some of the shots were a little close-in (including some practicing at panning- something I don't find myself doing much!) Still was alot of fun and any C&C would be welcome!

Thanks!

#4 is so amazing! i could look at it for hours. looks like some of your pans need work but ive never shot anything on water so maybe the waves going up and down are messing things up?

Thanks for the comment...

I was pretty happy the way my panning came out on #6, could've been a tad bit sharper but pretty happy with it... The 7 definitely could be a little better by keeping the farther boat more focused... But like I said, I don't pan very often so it was a good experience and a fun day!

sadowsk2,
Great shots? I have some shots from Saturday and Sunday,do you mind if I post them here?Since not much happened both days because of the weather I thought we could make this the official page for pictures of the race.

As a APBA water rescue team owner and Fire fighter. My vote is for the picture of the Firefighters from Detroit.

If you look closely at the second shot, between the front of the yellow boat and the orange marker in the water, you can see the red Formula boat upside down right after it crashed. It was hard to see the crash because of all the spray from the other boats. The driver was rescued and taken to the hospital. He was OK and released from the hospital. I will post a shot of him being rescued.

Claybuster-

Great shots you got there! I had the PERFECT shot when the 2nd boat flipped (the offshore "Motley Crue" boat) but it all happened so fast and I happened to have set my camera for panning shots and the shot came out with unacceptable motion blur. :( Still, I got some nice shots for the limited racing that went down on Sunday... I used a circular polarizer to minimize the reflection off the water so everything is saturated as well with minimal glare... Here are a few:

Anyone else who was done there, share your pics!
