Which do you prefer? I have always preferred square, but I was wondering about the rest of you! Square catchlights look much more natural to me, what do you think?

My own visual preference is that square catch lights simulate window light and round catch lights simulate sunlight, moon light, most other reflections from street lamps, etc.

So when I'm in the studio I find that I like both and don't really have a preference. When I'm outside I like to create a round catch light in an attempt to simulate a catch light created by the reflection of the sun in the eyes.

There is no rule and most people either use what they prefer, or which ever they own.

For a special effect (looks best when photographing women) try placing tall narrow reflectors to create cat-eye style catch lights in the eyes.
