Hi all,

Finally, the long awaited follow up to 40D + 70-200mm f/4.0 USM IS @ the Gallops ... :D

Visited The Gardens (external link) greyhound track [Newcastle, Australia] last weekend to try my hand at capturing some of the action.

It was tricky but a lot of fun. Was there for all 10 races shooting from different areas of the track to work out the best angle.

Here are the results ...

EXIF data should be intact for each image.

Any C&C would be a appreciated!

Nice shots! Is there a possibility of getting yourself lower to the ground for these? That's the only composition change I'd make. Also they look to be a bit on the magenta side to me (is this indoors? I'm curious how #2 ended up a different color)

You can look up the dog racing and coursing events in your region, from http://www.borzoi.org/schedules.php (external link)

Check with the club regarding photography, before you show up. Some may have exclusive agreements with a photographer, etc.

Thankyou all for your feedback! :D

Oh no! :(

I'm so jealous! That looks like a blast to shoot. Awesome captures!

It was a blast. I'm just glad I had the 10 races to try and find the right technique, position etc ...

Is there a possibility of getting yourself lower to the ground for these? That's the only composition change I'd make

No chance unfortunately. There was a 4 foot solid fence between me and the track.

Also they look to be a bit on the magenta side to me (is this indoors? I'm curious how #2 ended up a different color)

It was outdoors on a partly cloudy day. I shot RAW so manually adjusted the white balance in Adobe Camera Raw. I'd say I just got this one a bit off. In retrospect, I probably should have adjusted the white balance to all of them at one.

Check with the club regarding photography, before you show up. Some may have exclusive agreements with a photographer, etc.

I just turned up! I quickly checked with the stewards to make sure they didn't have any problems [they were great, only rules were no flash and keep yourself and the camera behind the fence].

There was an "official photographer" present [gidday Dave if you're reading this: I got his email address and promised to send a link if I posted them]. He took a "finishing post" shot for each race and a "winning dog & owner" shot upon request. I ended up having a good chat with him and he showed me some of his work framed and ready to give to the client [my only problem with him was that he shot with a Nikon. Ok, so no one's perfect! ;).

It was a great learning experience!

cheers,
J&D
