I am looking to buy an external flash for my Pro 1, any suggestions as to what the best choices are? I have been inquiring about the 420ex, does the Pro 1 take full advantage of this flash? Thanks in advance.

I have a 420EX with my G3, it makes a very nice companion, it is not fully functional though, as the AF illuminator does not work with the G series, I doubt it works with the Pro1 either, as it is related to how the camera focuses (All the Powershots I am aware of utilise the green pixels to focus, which is no good for a red AF illuminator!)

I have the 420ex. It works quite well, with the already noted exception that its built-in AF-illuminator will not work. Doesn't even gets triggered because the pro1 never had an AF-assist lamp to trigger in the first place. Perhaps one of these days, Canon will make a different line-up of external flashes that will incorporate a green AF-illuminator. One can only hope.

I'd link you some photos but pbase is having a catastrophic hick-up. :)

I love my 420EX with the Pro1. The swivel capability makes for lovely bounced lighting effects.

Get a Stoffen Omni Bounce diffuser while you're at it. Softens things considerable when doing portraits or candids.

Well,. the term "Best" is not relative.. so the BEST would be the new 580EX.. but it's pricey!

I agree that the 420EX would be a good match ;)

I would recomend the Lumiquest "Promax" system over the Sto fen.. a much better kit.. but larger. Still it will fit in your bag no problem.
