would a lens hood like this fit on any of my lenses since they are all 58mm lenses, or does each lense have to have a certain special type of hood or w/e
and what do you think a good hood type is for paintball, a crown hood, or that whole cover type hood
i have the EOS 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses

i really dont want to spend 40 bucks on a canon brand one when i can get a cheap one off ebay for 10 haha

Canon makes a hood that is specifically engineered for each of their lenses...unfortunately, they choose not to include the hoods with the consumer line of lenses. That said, you have quite an investment in your glass. Spend the money to buy the correct Canon hood...the one that is designed to provide optimum coverage for the particular lens you are using it on.

As for shooting paintball....get yourself a crappy P&S and use that...if you break that, you just go buy a new one. There isn't a hood or a filter on the market that is going to do much for you in the event of a direct hit from a paintball gun.

i know, but it serves a much better chance of protection for direct hits to the lens, and i have seen several times that filters have been lifesavers because of direct hits to the lens

No photographic filter is going to provide any real "protection" to a direct hit from a paintball. In fact, having a filter mounted might even be much worse than not having anything over the lens. Most filters will shatter into thousands of tiny glass shards if hit with a paintball. I definitely would NOT want to be cleaning up a gooey mess that contains glass shards, as that would be very likely to scratch the lens.

If you want some REAL protection from the flying paintballs, get a "filter" made of a polycarbonate material like Lexan or Plexiglas.

Direct hits on the lens is not your only problem - since the camera is not weather sealed, a paint hit can get into any of the buttons and foul the contact, or freeze the operation of the buttons. Same same with the buttons and switches on the lens.

Thought of an underwater housing - or a camera blimp?
