Ok wife's brother plays in league. They made the 150 mile drive up near us so we went and I shot abot 500 images. the 1d Mark IIn did well but did not go above 1600 ISO used the 70-200 F2.8 IS and underexpose 1/3 to 2/3 to keep shutter up? What else could I do with this set up????
THANKS I will add mor samples also!!!!!

I would have shot ISO 3200 and exposed correctly rather than shooting at 1600 and underexposing.

SO you think the extra grain would have been OK, I dont have noise ninja? Maybe I should buy it down the road....

News,

Your timing is pretty good, but most of these aren't the sharpest. Actually, on one of the night shots (#2) your shutter speed was OK (1/640s) but the shot still isn''t crisp. On others you shutter speed is WAY too low (1/250s - 1/320s), plus, you have -1/3 stop EC: why was this? Your shots are already underexposed - I'm guessing this was a mistake?

The daytime shots are a little better, though the timing on 4 is too late, and 5 should be taken from the end of the field (or wait for the runner to turn your way) so we'd be able to see his face. Also, watch your horizons; 3 and 4 or a little off, and 5 is quite a bit tilted.

To answer your question, yes, Noise Ninja is worthwhile. Shooting at ISO1600 is a piece of cake, and even ISO3200 is acceptable.

Also, I would never shoot night football without a flash unless it was at an NCAA/Pro stadium (where flash isn't allowed, anyway). The light is just too dim to make it worth my time.

OK thanks for the input! I don't normally do this, and haven't watched football since 1993 or so. It was sorta weird timing and all. I was worried about shutter that is why I underexposed slightly to bring it up. I can actually bump them more but the whites are reading almost 230 which is a good number. But faces are dark. Will have to try using 3200 and see? The rear LCD appeared "GRAINY" at 1600 so didn't want to risk it! Guess a 200 F1.8 would be good...
Also needed better vantage points as you said. I will load 100% crops of night shots. I used the PS3 noise reduction and made detail low on some so that may effect sharpness I think? I didn't know a flash was OK....

News - that's not bad for a 100% crop. I'd be glad to run NN on your image if you'd post an unedited shot (hosted elsewhere otherwise you'll exceed the POTN limit) - even one at reduced size like 400K.

Flash isn't always OK. Here in Illinois, it's allowed up to and including the HS level - at least usually. I've never been asked to not use flash in over 100 HS games, but I've heard others have.
