So I've use the Honda EU3000 generator on a few shoots and love it. It's quite, has all the power I've needed from it, pure sine wave inverter, kinda big and heavy though. Also a bit expensive. I've just been renting one when I need it.

I'm running two Photogenic 500ws and a 1000ws off of it. I'm curious though as to how much power is being pulled per flash? I've heard that the ws rating of strobes doesn't correlate exactly to what it uses per pop because they gradually recharge, not recharge all in one instant... Basically I want to know if I can go out and buy the cheaper, smaller, lighter, more convenient Honda EU1000 generator and still use my 2kws worth of light off of it.

Anyone have first hand experience using generators with strobes and know some of these things?

My EU1000i is a bit on the weak side for recycling a single 640ws flash (AlienBees B1600).

Read the Specifications in the owner's manual for you unit! For example of Photogenic PL1250 monolight, it states
"Main Supply ...............105-125 VAC, 60 Hz, 10 amp.
Consumption ............... 0.2 amps idling,
15 amps charge."

So when the unit is recycling it draws up to 15 amps at peak for the recycle time, then it goes into an idling mode where it consumes 0.2 amps continuously.
