Some Steam Tractors

Two years ago, I got some shots of some of these same tractors with a different camera. Yesterday I wanted to try again with a 1d and 12-24 Wide Angle lens. I see these every day I go out, cause they are at the bottom of our hill. These last two are something new though, more like a all wheel drive steam truck or something. You can see a drive shaft going forward and is connected by several huge V-belts to a differential under the front end. An interesting takeoff.

Neat machines.

They are, very neat. I really need to get down there on a cloudy day, Maybe even in the rain. Hot iron doesn't seem to take good pictures. Several years ago, the owner, who owns a restaurant here, had them all fired up on a weekend. Or some of them. Quite a site to see one of these things running.

Seeing them running would be cool.

Why limit yourself? Since they are close, try some late light shots, too.

Now theres a thought. I use to be a night owl, but have since switched hours and now I am sometimes sound asleep before full dark. On the other hand, I am up and moving before daylight.

Thanks Bill and Xoote. Not sure there is any science behind it, but black iron, once it gets hot in the sun, does not photograph good, in my opinion. Possibly too much Infra-Red for the sensor filter or the sensor itself? I have notice it with these machines and a few old steam railroad engines I have shot in the past.

I love these old machines.

As a young man (before child labor laws), my dad worked for J.I. Case. I have a model of a Case steam engine on my desk.

I've only ever seen a couple of these under steam, but it is definitely something to see (and hear).

Accent on the hear. You got that right. They are loud, very loud. I think these might be retired now. I remember, several years ago, the owner of these had some kind of regional meet on this lot and for a weekend, some of these and some brought in were fired up and run for the joy and enlightenment of everybody, for blocks around, whether you wanted to see them or not. I live almost a mile away, and we could hear them up there.
