I had good results with a Primary Red and a Primary Green, but when I tried a much lighter color like a lavender, it was pretty much non existance. . . Is it a matter of more light power or moving the light closer to the background? What ajustments should I make on these less intense colors? Thanks.

Photoguy assuming you are working with manual light settings, are you metering the BG light with the gel on? different gels have different difusion, or suck the power out of the light. a light gel may be blown out and the color lost...?

What ajustments should I make on these less intense colors? Try just the opposite. Less light = more color. Reduce power or move the light further away. Watch for spill from your other lights since the more subtle colors will wash out easier.
